NEWS AND NOTES

  • OUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE HELD AT 7:00 P.M. ON TUESDAY, July 20, 2010. The 5 minute program will be expanded this month and the long program shortened to cover two fun Arkansas rockhounding adventures. The first program will feature the Perrys and Vaughns talking about and showing photos and samples from their spring 2010 Arkansas quartz crystal mining adventures. After the break, Lauren Vaughn will share information, pictures of the site and rock and mineral samples from Arkansas' Crater of Diamonds State Park.
  • SOME UPCOMING CLUB MEETING HIGHLIGHTS.... August will not have a regular meeting but on Sunday, August 22, the annual club picnic will be held at the home of John and Jane Matz. Information, directions and sign-up sheets will be available at the July 20 meeting. John Matz will share the 5 minute program on September 21. The long program will be announced later.
  • The 2010 Copper Country Mineral Retreat will be held August 8 - 14.... The event website has the schedule and other information for the event. Contact the event scheduler for the particular events you are interested in attending. Register ASAP for available openings. You can visit the website by clicking on the underlined event name above.
  • A field trip was taken to the LaFarge Quarry in Alpena on Saturday, June 12, 2010. Some nice fossils of many types were collected. We will feature some specimens from this trip and encourage others to bring their favorite fossils, as the main program at a meeting later this year.
  • Ken Schug and Tom Fordyce have been teaching cabochon classes. Check with Education Coordinator, Dutch Zonderman about getting in one of these classes that will start again in the fall. The cost is $15.00. Remember, you must be a member of the club to participate in these or other classes.
  • Are you interested in sharing your rock and mineral knowledge or skill? We are compiling a list of names and topics that club members may be willing to share with school classes or other community groups. We get a few requests each year, including a current contact for assistance from the new club in Big Rapids, to speak or share skills with the groups. Several members have had the opportunity to share their love of the hobby. Contact Lauren Vaughn with your area of expertise and availability schedule.
  • If you have an idea for a club field trip, let one of the club officers know the details and we can see if it can become a club reality.
  • The GTARMC Club show is only 3 months away. It will be September 25 and 26, 2010. Be thinking about what you would like to do to help this year. Contact Tom Fordyce for more information.
  • Be sure to check the calendar and the GTARMC newsletter for further updates!
  • The 2010 Petoskey Stone Festival was held at Barnes Park in Eastport on Saturday, May 29, 2010. Check the festival website by clicking on the event title for information.
